SCHOOL ACTION PLANS WITH ACCOUNTABILITY-EDISON SCHOOL DISTRICT

One of the most important aspects of school improvement is the collection and organization of student performance data. More importantly, schools that analyze data make better decisions about which practices to replicate, improve, and change. But in order to truly reap the benefits of data collection and decision making, there must be a systematic, continuous process designed to maximize results.

A benefit of our “DECISION MAKING FOR RESULTS” process was the proliferation of grade level or content area goals and strategies in the form of an action plan. Action plans represent a commitment by the adults to change their instructional teaching behaviors. And we didn’t have to start the action planning process from scratch. One of the best resources for strategy creation and implementation is Marzano’s Classroom Instruction That Works. Teachers used this resource to assist with strategies designed to support improvement goals. Once grade level/content area goals and strategies were created, action plans were distributed, copied, enlarged and posted at all school sites as a center of focus. They are referred to all year long. Posted action plans are in close proximity to data walls, which also act as a point of reference and justification.

The following Action Plans are a result of specific, focused, data driven decision making. Each grade level created Action Plans based on the California Standards Test (CST) results and other local assessments. We focused on two areas:

  1. BulletIncreasing the percentage of students Proficient and/or Advanced in Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science

  1. BulletIncreasing the percent correct on prioritized sub-tests from the CST. Example:

Increase the percent correct of 3rd graders in Reading Comprehension from 50% to 58% by the end of the school year as measured by the CST administered in April of 2009.
